History and Heritage of India – An Introduction by Dr Chithra Madhavan

This book, with more than eighty articles, is primarily meant for students and those
who are interested in knowing about the history and heritage of India. It is indeed
It’s unfortunate that most school students in India, due to various factors, have virtually no
interest in this subject. It is hoped that this book will serve as a basic introduction, which
will subsequently lead the readers to delve deep into the rich history of India, and to visit
heritage sites in this country.
This book has three sections. The first is about different dynasties across India, some being
lesser known. They have been arranged, as far as possible, according to chronology. The
second section has articles on general topics on heritage such as pre-historic paintings, pillars
of Emperor Asoka’s reign, ancient educational centres and others. The third part is about
heritage sites and temples in various places and the chapters here have been arranged in an
alphabetical order. All the chapters have deliberately been kept short and easy to read, with
references at the end.
